It's the kind of thing you never forget...
It was way back in 2001 and friends were just starting to get online and kept asking me for advice on what firewall software to run, as I'd been online for a few years at that point.
After the first couple of time it happened I checked the site for the software I used and liked and spotted a link saying "affiliates", at the time I had no idea what affiliate marketing was, so when I clicked the link and read the info I was intrigued...
I got setup with their program (through Commission Junction) and then set up the affiliate link on my website homepage, so I could tell them where to find the link and click.
Note: can you guess what the firewall software was? Answer below.
It was a couple of weeks later when I logged in to CJ (Commission Junction) and found my first couple of commissions, just under $20 in total, but it seemed a LOT more to me at the time!
If you'd been there I reckon you'd actually have been able to see the light bulb go off above my head...
"What if I could get other internet users to click on that link?"
I soon realised that I'd need a better description of what the software was and did, as these people wouldn't be friends who already 'Knew, like & trust' me, these would be strangers, so I'd need to do some sort of review...
It took me just a few hours to throw up a basic review page, with a couple of images and the affiliate link on a separate page on my site, although once the commissions started coming in I ended up buying dedicated domain name for the software review.
Then I started wondering if there were other software systems that I could write reviews for and sell...
AND I still build simple niche based review sites, they still bring in passive income for me every month...
Although it is a lot easier now, the tools I use have come on a LONG way in the last 16 years!
