SocialPiG is Ready for Beta Testing

Email not displaying correctly? View it in your browser.
BlogPiG
Dear rosi

SocialPiG is Ready for Beta Testing

People, we are nearly there…

SocialPiG is in Alpha testing. We are so excited about this product, it has morphed into a beautiful and a powerful social backlinking animal.

The next step is to Beta test it, and that’s where we need your help!

We’re looking for just ten beta testers initially. The beta programme will start 1st Dec. Before you kindly volunteer yourself, please make sure you read the rest of this message.

Being a beta tester actually requires some work on your part so before signing up, please make sure you are ready for the commitment. You will need to dedicate several hours of your time (over a two-week period) to help flush out any bugs before SocialPiG is ready for general release.

Beta tester requirements:

  • You must be an existing BlogPiG member
  • You must actually use SocialPiG in a live environment (your site url is required)
  • You should understand how WordPress should work and how to identify potential bugs
  • You'll need to document each step you took, what page you were on, and the bug behaviour

What a beta tester is not:

  • Someone just looking for an early copy of SocialPiG (There will be bugs)
  • Someone who is a member but not currently using any other BlogPiG products

VERY IMPORTANT: Ladies and gents, this is Beta software, I’ll say it again: there will be bugs. That means we do not recommend you test it on your favourite blog, your high earning blogs or any site which you hold very dear.

What’s in it for you? Well, you get a sneak peak at the software (useful if you want to line up any projects with it or have any intention to promote it) and we’ll make sure you’re well looked after when the product goes live.

If you are interested and believe you qualify to test SocialPiG, please post a comment below confirming:

  • You have one or more live WP sites you can test this on
  • You have the time to test it
  • You understand what a bug looks like

I'll then pick up with you over email.

Thanks in advance.
Fiona

Can We Stop Feeding the Guru Beast?

Email not displaying correctly? View it in your browser.
BlogPiG
Dear rosi

Can We Stop Feeding the Guru Beast?

So, we’re back from the World Internet Summit. It was an experience. It’s tempting to post an amusing satire on the event to illustrate some of the hype and shovel selling which went on (and you know how much we loathe that stuff here at BlogPiG) but, well, that could belittle the bigger issue.

Just to set the scene, I’ll explain that WIS is really a beauty pageant or pitch fest for Internet Marketing ‘systems’. Nothing unusual there, these events occur across all industries so that suppliers can get in front of potential customers. So, you had some well known names standing on a large stage for 90 minutes at a time telling the audience of several hundred how they’d made their fortune and how the audience could now buy the very system behind the wealth to make an income (or fortune) for themselves. So, you had the ‘gurus’ and you had those people who were looking for a system with which to make money online or to enhance what they were already doing online. Then there were a bunch of us there who were attending in order to network and keep up with industry gossip and trends. I’ll say now that we only sat through two full presentations and stepped in and out of about five others – the rest of the time was spent talking to people.

The spectrum of knowledge there was immense, from people who were completely new to IM to those who’ve been making a living out of it for over a decade. As it goes we spent most of our time with the more seasoned end of the scale.

What seared an impression onto my brain was the spectrum of ethics which was also on display. I’ll leave it to our new friend Andrew Hansen to illustrate just what it was like at the lower end of the ethical scale. I was standing opposite him on the Friday when I overheard the same anecdote. I had exactly the same feeling I had at a bank I once worked for, when I heard a person in a significant position refer to our customers, or potential customers in a particular manner. I’d never wanted to work anywhere less.

What I cling to is that we met so many people who do operate within the world of IM in an ethical and fair way. There are several guys out there who work really, really hard to create genuinely useful and valuable products for their customers and it was a pleasure (and a relief) to meet them. But they’re generally not the millionaires and are often not on the stage. Long has it been thus. I asked the same question five times to different people (all established IMers, several of whom have ‘brand names’): Is the tide turning? Will those of us who have a product proposition which ‘does what it says on the tin’ and who skip the hype be able to make more headway in 12 months’ time? Will customers begin to see that you can’t make tens of thousands of dollars just by spending $27 on an eBook, or $2,797 on just one part of the puzzle? No-one could answer that question. The consensus seemed to be that there would still be enough newbies piling into the top of the funnel to keep feeding the ‘guru beast’.

Now, I’ve done enough psychometric testing exercises in my corporate life to know that I come out as an optimist and an idealist BUT I am still putting my stake in the ground and saying that I think the tide will turn and that IMers will get smarter and more savvy so that even if there are newbies piling into the top of the funnel, more of them are going in with their eyes open and are popping out at the bottom as clever internet marketers. So I do think there is a place for those of us who plug away at non-hyped products and that we don’t have to resort to launches which are based on groundless hype and bonuses.

I put it to some like-minded individuals at WIS that we could head a revolt against the hype (I’d had a couple of glasses of wine by this point on the Saturday night) and form our own circle of ethical IMers. I’ll be honest and say that this just generated some nervous shuffling of feet. Some of these people perhaps aren’t sure yet that they can survive beyond the existing IM playground. But having spoken to one of our savvy customers on Sunday and hearing his thoughts on things, I think that the thousands of people out there who look for IM solutions do deserve some kind of indication of which side of the fence those people selling IM solutions stand on. To be honest, some of the big names would even benefit because not all of them sell smoke and mirrors, some of them genuinely provide the important building blocks of starting an income online and that includes some of the presenters at WIS, I am sure – but they’re getting tarred with the same brush.

Now, our said savvy customer did not quite go for my idea of a badge or logo (he had his own good ideas, and a logo could be abused anyway, just like the widely abused overt premise ‘are you sick of all the hype? Me too, it’s disgusting so you should buy my product and here are 40 reasons, a load of bonuses and a major false promise to make you’ which seems to adorn 50% of the hypey sales letters now) but he did make me think we could all just share with our respective customers when we think we have found someone else who is operating fairly. Surely banding together like that can make a difference? A difference to those of you looking for a solution and those of us offering one? And of course we who build products must also stick to our guns and continue to operate fairly!

So where has the WIS left me? Well, having run a gauntlet of emotions throughout the weekend, by Monday morning I am feeling steadfast. I know that BlogPiG has to continue along the path of delivering products which do what they say they do. I know we have to continue to leave out the BS. I know we have to find others who do the same.

So, am I a crazy woman? Did I just not get enough sleep this weekend? Are there any big name gurus out there whom you’d give credit to for your own journey and success in IM? Do you think the sales letters and launches we ‘enjoy’ now in IM will stand the test of time? Will those tactics still work for the masses in 2011? Or 2012? Are there any companies out there who you think deserve a shout for being honest that you want to share with the rest of us?

Tell me! Because if all along you’ve wanted me to write you a sales letter with claims about my vast wealth, a picture of my house, my car, my last holiday, my gigolo, my cat and a list of bonuses then I’ll do it! I now know how it’s done! :-)

Yours faithfully,
Fiona

Stop Digging

Email not displaying correctly? View it in your browser.
BlogPiG
Dear rosi

Stop Digging

I was once given a sage piece of advice by a boss:  Once in a while you have to stop digging, get your head out of the hole and look around.  That's hard to do sometimes when your 'to do' list is longer than your arm.

Anyway, I stopped digging for a moment today and happened to have a re-read of one of our product pages.  I realised with some surprise that even though the video mentioned one of the unique selling points of TagPiG, the copy on the page itself really didn't make mention of this key point!

Good grief, what's the point in creating a great feature if you don't tell anyone about it? (I said as I clipped Gary around the ear!).

I know that BlogPiG has a higher calibre of member than your average site – I mean, you're all so resourceful, intelligent and good looking (will flattery get me anywhere?) but I'm guessing you're not telepathic, well at least not many of you.  So I thought I'd just highlight one of TagPiG's features in case you're not making use of it yet.

You'll already know that TagPiG automatically adds themed tags to your blogs and allows you to manage them, therefore getting way more pages deep indexed by the search engines.  But what you might not have realised is that there is a unique feature which rotates all the tags created so that you help preserve your page rank!

Let me explain:  TagPiG might source 30 or even 50 tags which relate to your blog post.  Now, if you were to display all 50 or so tags at one time, your page rank could be dispersed among the many sub pages and diluted.  TagPiG avoids this potential concern by allowing you to set a maximum number of tags to display at any one time, say five, or seven,  and it then rotates through the 50 tags.  That means that each time Google's bots return to your post they are presented with a new set of tags and so index a new set of tag pages.  That way your page rank isn't decimated but you still get all those pages deep indexed!  Clever, huh?

For more information about TagPiG just go to the product page here.

Anyway, the product page has been duly updated but it got me wondering if we undersell ourselves anywhere else.  If you ever spot a feature or benefit of one of our products that we have neglected to mention, let us know!  If we include it on the product page we'll say thank you with a year's fee license to a product of your choice!

Best wishes as ever,

Fiona

Fancy a Pint?*

Email not displaying correctly? View it in your browser.
BlogPiG
Dear rosi

Fancy a Pint?*

*Or, for those not familiar with that British colloquialism, the translation is: Wanna grab a beer?

So, today we got our tickets to go to the World Internet Summit UK in London.

The summit is on for four days (11th through 14th November) and we’ll probably be there on the Friday and Saturday. Never been before, no idea if it’s good but it came strongly recommended by a colleague of ours who’s been working for himself online for years and is well known at these things.

So, if anyone is planning to attend, let us know, we can exchange no.s, then come join us for a beer! If you haven’t got your ticket yet, let me know and I can send you a link which gets you and a friend in for $50 total rather than the $197 advertised.

I appreciate this invite is probably only useful to our UK customers – if we make it out to anything in the US in 2011, the offer of a beer will also stand!

If you’re wondering where Gary’s got to, well, he and Alex have got their heads down fine tuning SocialPiG. So much work is going into this product. I can’t wait for it to be ready, but my impatience is over-ruled by Gary’s perfectionism!

Anyway, if you’re in the UK and plan to or now want to head down to WIS, then, seriously, come and have a drink with us!

All the best,
Fiona

P.S. If our jolly British chin wagging ever sounds like a load of cobblers to you, try these two amusing sites for translations: www.effingpot.com or www.translatebritish.com

Dear rosi

You Scratch My Back… (DoFollow)

It’s always good to give something back.

So by way of thanks for all the encouragement & feedback I’ve been sent recently via our blog comments I’d like to offer you guys some things in return:

BlogPiG is Now DoFollow!

We’re enabling dofollow on your blog comments so you get the link juice for all your hard work. For obvious reasons we cannot just enable dofollow on all comments, that would lead to a spam tsunami. Instead we’re rewarding our most generous members.

Anyone with 10 or more approved comments is automatically promoted to DoFollow status on all their past a future comments.

Our DoFollow heroes will see a star icon appear next to their username in the comments section when DoFollow status is achieved.

Basic anti-abuse rules apply:

  • We dofollow link your comment username
  • Use Your name or nickname NOT “Golf Clubs” etc. that sucks.
  • No pointless links in the comment body
  • Be consistent with your comment email address
  • Only useful & relevant comments are approved
  • Username should be linked your FaceBook or Twitter or personal blog

Get a Gravatar Already

If you’ve not setup your Gravatar, why not? It takes 2 minutes and it makes much more fun to respond to real people when I’m answering comments. We’ve also improved the recent comments widget to display all the latest comments with a lovely mugshot from your gravatar, you can see it in action here. This is a great way to build a public profile.

If you don’t have a Gravatar it’s a free service run by the folks behind WordPress – get one here.

Comments = Prizes

Lower down you’ll another widget with a league table for the top comments this month. On the first working day of each month I’ll give a free Pro license for any one of our products to whoever had the most comments for the previous month.

Just another way of saying thank you.

I’m also testing CommentLuv, KeywordLuv, and rewards for retweets and FB Likes but that’s a bit more tricky to setup – stand by for more info soon.

Do you have other ideas or suggestions?

Do you think this is cool or dumb?

Is anybody out there….?

Should BlogPiG Kajabi? You Decide…

Email not displaying correctly? View it in your browser.
BlogPiG
Dear rosi

Should BlogPiG Kajabi? You Decide…

So you must have heard about Kajumbi this week right?

No? Where have you been? :)

Kabimbi is the latest creation from Andy Jenkins. Andy is one of the few gurus who’s managed to keep me subscribed to his list (even after my recent subscription culls) simply because he’s funny, his emails & posts sometimes benefit me and his products are pretty cool too. Video Boss was his previous launch.

In a nutshell Kijaba is a being sold as an Internet Marketer’s dream platform. You may already have seen it action if you followed any of the big ticket launches this year

  • Kern’s List Control
  • Product Launch Formula 3
  • Outsource Force from Reese
  • etc…

They were all launched and managed on the Kajambo platform. And to be fair they were all absolutely huge launches, I’m talking multi-million dollar launches in just a few days. But I’m guessing that had a lot more to do with the people behind the launches than the platform they used. Let’s face it, Frank Kern could launch a bottle rocket in the park and people would pay him a million bucks for the ebook!

I’ve been following the Kabobo launch for a little over a week now, and the sales videos are quite simply out of this world, Andy really knows how to put together a nice presentation. Hype aside though, I think there might really be something to this Kadubi product…

It’s basically a bunch of modules all under one roof that allow you to design a custom launch and the back-end membership system to deliver the product when you’re done. There’s a whole other bunch of bell’s & whistles in there too – drip feed, video encoding/hosting, member chat etc. I won’t go into detail here.

What I’d like you to do is watch the first video for me for 2 reasons:

  1. It’s absolutely awesome! (And I’m British so I don’t use the word awsesome lightly). Just turn-up your speakers and sit back, the first 5 mins is like watching a trailer for a UFC comeback night!
  2. Then tell me what you think. As a member, is this the sort of experience you’re after? Are these the features you desire? Should BlogPiG implement Kimosabi? Do you like this sort of launch/video?
  3. Even if it’s not right for me it could be just what you’re looking for…and yes, these are my Kawomble affilliate links…

Yeah I know, that was 3 reasons…

I’ve already had a preview of parts of the Kawooga system inside their JV area and it is very slick as you can imagine. I couldn’t help thinking though that most of it could be replicated with some WordPress themes, plugins & custom code. That kind of defeats the object, the whole point of Kaboom is to remove the need to integrate and code and upgrade and tweak so you can just get on with the job of looking after your members.

I must admit that idea does appeal.

The Kagoogle launch has been a pretty standard 3 stage affair so far, if you are interested you can skip the launch cycle using the shortcuts below:

Anyway, Kajabba goes on sale tommorow for early birders and Andy’s offering a 2 week free trial which I’ll probably sign-up to just to try it out. I might take some screencasts when I’m inside to show you how it looks in more detail.

Please leave a comment and let me know what you think.

ps. I had lot’s of response to the FaceBook business page post. Thanks for all the kind words. A few people wanted to make PayPal donations by way of thanks which is a really nice gesture but unecessary. The quickest way to thank someone for a good post is to help them spread the word – just retweet or share it on facebook, or repost it on your blog with a mention. There’s lots more where that came from.

How To Create a FaceBook Business Page & Username

Email not displaying correctly? View it in your browser.
BlogPiG
Dear rosi

How To Create a FaceBook Business Page & Username

Nice! +40 responses to yesterdays email. Blew the 25 I needed out of the water.

Seems like most people agree with me that creating a nice FaceBook business URL is a royal pain in the a**.

I’ve come to the conclusion that the fact that very few people know how to do this is probably a good thing. It means there are plenty of good keywords/usernames left for us to grab!

With this post you’ll find a video that shows exactly how to create a FaceBook vanity URL for your business. It’s just under 10 mins long.

Here’s the basic outline of what to do in text format for those who asked:

  1. Logout of facebook and visit http://facebook.com
  2. Ignore the signup form and click on the “Create a Page for a celebrity, band or business.” link below the form
  3. Choose the Official Page section an enter your settings – I chose Brand=products, page name = autoblogging (although it is not really that important)
  4. Click create official page and confirm the next window
  5. If you get a warning saying your page name is not available simply change the type in the brand dropdown, I changed it to consumer products
  6. Resubmit and it should work just fine
  7. Now you need to link the new page to a personal FaceBook account, I just use my normal personal FB account. FB do not like you to have 2 accounts so be careful if creating a new one.
  8. Once logged in you should see your new page. There are lots of things you can setup here, logos, text, tabs etc.
  9. The URL of your page will be similar to http://www.facebook.com/pages/Autoblogging/152563548114773 not very pretty!
  10. Visit http://facebook.com/username/ and choose your new page from the drop-down
  11. You will get a warning saying it is not elgible yet, this is because you need at least 25 FB likes
  12. Now we’ll get you 25 likes
  13. Setup an account at http://microworkers.com
  14. Make a $10 (min) deposit
  15. Setup a new campaign for 30 FaceBook likes (details in the video) should cost around $4
  16. Wait up to 24 hours for approval
  17. Check your facebook page and it will now have +30 likes
  18. Revisit http://facebook.com/username/ and choose your new page from the drop-down
  19. It will now be eligible so enter your desired username, be careful you cannot change it.
  20. Either choose a brand focus or go for SEO by choosing a keyword/key phrase.
  21. Once entered and approved you will be take to your new page via you new vanity URL e.g. http://facebook.com/autoblogging (might take a few mins to resolve
  22. All done!

Now the next bit is entirely up to you but you can of course create as many pages with usernames as you want. You can choose pretty much any keywords for the usernames you want. Who’s going to bet me that a http://facebook.com/keyword URL in a moderately competitive niche is going to have a fairly easy time getting on the first page if you just add a few good keyword articles and point in a handful of +PR2 links :)

Whilst there are probably still an awful lot of unclaimed brand usernames, FB seem pretty hot on monitoring this situation so be ready to lose the page or even the approving account. If you do want to go down the brand snagging route then I would probably risk a second throwaway FB account and put the page in there.

Incidently you get 2 for the price of one in this post, as well as the FB username tip I’ve quickly shown your one of my personal secret weapons – Microworkers.

This is such an awesome resource and I plane on showing you exactly what you can do with it in future videos.

As ever please leave a comment or question on the post.

It makes it much easier to put together the next one when I know people are reading/watching and appreciate what you do.

You can even let me know what usernames you’ve managed to snag and make me jealous I didn’t think of them first!

Do You Want a FaceBook Business Page?

Email not displaying correctly? View it in your browser.
BlogPiG
Dear rosi

Do You Want a FaceBook Business Page?

So I finally grabbed facebook.com/blogpig for our brand page.

I’ve had twitter.com/blogpig & youtube.com/blogpig for ages. So this completes the set.

It now gives a nice home for all those FaceBook fans, likes and shares.

One of the things that really surpised me is how difficult Facebook make it to setup a page for your business with a good vanity URL.

This is the default URL FaceBook provide:

facebook.com/pages/blogpig/152563548114773

But to get to this is hard work!

facebook.com/blogpig

I’m plan on shooting a short video on exactly how I did this and how you can grab a great FaceBook page and vanity username for your business, product or blog.

I’ll show you how to bypass the FaceBook restriction for new pages too.

I’ll even show you how you can use FaceBook Pages for SEO purposes if you’re really savvy!

If you’re interested in a video then leave a comment on this post.

If I can get +25 comments I’ll produce & send the video showing the whole process end-to-end for you tommorow.

Dear rosi

Drive-by Colon Cleanse

Well done for opening this after a title like that! :) I couldn’t resist the comparison…

Just a quick note today, I wanted to share with you one of my more useful and well used desktop (Win) tools.

It’s called SpaceSniffer, no it’s not SpacePiG, this one’s not one of mine. It’s a very handy disk space visualizer so you instantly see exactly which directories and files are hogging the most space on your drives.

There was a time when I didn’t give a flip about what was on my multiple drives, space wasn’t an issue, I downloaded AND KEPT everything!

Since then I’ve started to embrace minimalism in many areas of my life one of which has been my office setup. Moving from a 3 PC 3 screen setup to a single 17″ laptop has been one of the best moves I ever made.

At the same time I also decided I wanted to mirror my entire D: drive online with DropBox for total peace of mind and portability, but this meant limiting myself to 100GB of space.

SpaceSniffer helped me shed almost a terabyte of crud from my disks – old videos, mysterious temp directories, tons of PDF’s & zips that I am just never going to read. I’m now running at well below 100GB and by using SpaceSniffer regularly I plan to keep it that way.

The benefits have been astounding:

  • I can actually find things quickly now
  • I have peace of mind knowing my whole disk is safely mirrored offsite
  • Windows file search doesn’t start crying when I ask it to locate p*.*
  • My skin feels smoother
  • My kids are smarter
  • I’ve cleared all my debts
  • Well, you get the idea…

It’s a completely free download, not an email form or API key in sight. No ones making any money here, just a free tool from me to you.

I’ve used similar tools that didn’t perform this well and cost $40.

Grab it here.

I’d love to build up a list of tools you couldn’t live without, I’m not just talking plugins and IM here, we spend most of time on PC/Macs not servers anyway.

Leave a comment below with top tools.

Dear rosi

Okay, I Screwed Up…

If I was a marketing guru I might get away with calling yesterdays SocialPiG email a prelaunch stunt, but alas I’m not. It was a screw-up fair and square… I’m sorry.

Yeterday’s email wasn’t supposed to go out at all, it was just an intro paragraph for SocialPiG in BlogPiG Labs. I love Mailchimp’s RSS to mail feature but now and again it can bite you on the …!

Anyway, given the overwhelming response I don’t think too much harm was done. There were a lot of comments and emails so I’ve pulled together the main questions and included a short FAQ for everyone below:

Is it just me, or where’s the actual link to SocialPiG?
No it’s not just you, I screwed up yesterday, there is no link to SocialPiG up yet.

I’ve Been a user of Auto Social Poster since it first came out and I can absolutely say that this technique works. If you’ve got ‘trickle feed’ as well then I’m all over this. When can we dive in?
I know bookmarking works! Yes we do have trickle feed as you call it (I like that name). ETA is still 3 weeks I’m afraid.

How much is it and where can I buy it?
Costing is still TBD but it’ll be inline with our other plugins I imagine. There are services attached to it though. ProxyPiG, CaptchapiG etc.

How does it work?
SocialPiG works by automatically bookmarking your blog posts with several (+30 in phase 1) social bookmarking sites. It does this via a network of SB accounts that we maintain behind an proxy farm and captcha service so you never have to worry about account creation or maintenance ever again. Your posts are trickle fed into the bookmark network gradually to appear natural and build a large organic (deep) backlink network over time. The accounts are also periodically fed with authority sites to balance the average pagerank and domain age in each account. There are thousands of accounts & thousands of IPs available. The maths that goes on inside the bookmark network to control posting rates and times is pretty advanced too.

If anyone has any special requests for features or functionality please do leave a comment here. We’re a community driven development company, we don’t develop ideas in a vacuum.

Hasn’t this been done before?
Not like this. Sure there are plenty of Social Bookmarking tools and plugins out there and I’ve tried most of them. Don’t get me wrong, they’re good, some of them are very good in fact. The problem is they all make more work for me. I have to set them up, I have to create accounts, I have maintian the accounts, I have to schedule them, I have to tweak them, I have to worry about my accounts getting banned because they don’t trickle feed bookmarks, I have to create new accounts….blah! You get the idea, some of you have probabaly been there or are still there. Tools should’t make more work for you, they should just work! SocialPiG just works…

Is this the Holy Grail of automatic backling? (my question)
No, probably not on its own. It’s another string in your bow and a very powerful one at that. The fact that it has zero overhead is the real win here. BlogPiG labs will open soon and you’ll get to see all the other auto backlink goodies we have in development. A combination of them all may well be just the ticket ;)

Can I promote it?
Sure you can, I’ll add the SocialPiG links to our partner page as soon as it’s launched.
